The fine lines beside the eye we get from smiling, squinting and laughing are caused by the contraction of the muscle around the eyes. We see a group of fine lines to the side of our eyes sometimes extending under the eye to the cheek when we make these expressions.
Dynamic lines or wrinkles form when the face is contracted to form different expressions. When the facial muscles are contracted, the skin temporarily wrinkles. When the facial muscles relax, the skin should get back to its original position and there should be no wrinkles.
Static Lines and Wrinkles
Static wrinkles are different from dynamic lines or wrinkles, as they are visible even if the facial muscles are not being used. When the face is at rest, the static wrinkles will be noticeable. As the skin gets older and loses its elasticity, after smiling or frowning, the skin will not spring back immediately. Over time, the repeated contraction of the muscle causes lines that are there even without expression.
Other Causes of Static Lines
In addition to frequent contracting of the facial muscles, static lines or wrinkles may also be caused by:
Exposure to sun
Exposure to harsh chemicals
Weight loss and loss of facial volume
Anti-Wrinkle injections with Botulinum Toxin are the best treatment and often gives excellent results. This area can be treated on its own but is more effective when combined with the forehead and frown lines, creating a natural unopposed effect.
Depending on the dose used and the age of the person treated, anti wrinkle injections can be used to prevent lines setting in/deepening or to soften existing lines.
Maximum results are usually seen after 10-14 days and will typically last 3-4 months. Many of our clients find that repeated treatment at 3-4 month intervals will prevent the lines returning to their former state.
